The 2025 Concert Band season kicks off with the Second Annual Community Band Extravaganza inside the historic SunnyBrook Ballroom. All four bands that participated in last year’s highly successful inaugural event are returning and will be joined by two newcomers. That gives lovers of band music the opportunity to see six ensembles present concerts on the same afternoon.
The bands are a diverse group of organizations from the Tri-County Region of Berks, Montgomery and Chester Counties. Each will present a 35-minute concert of traditional and modern band music, including pop, Broadway, show and movie tunes, marches, Big Band music, lighter selections and serious wind ensemble repertoire.
About the Bands (listed in alphabetical order):
The Boyertown Alumni Marching Unit Concert Band will once again host the Extravaganza. The Concert Band is a part of the Boyertown Alumni Marching Unit, which was formed in 1976 and will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary next year. It has performed in concerts and parades in eight states and the District of Columbia, including concerts at the Lincoln Memorial, outside Faneuil Hall in Boston and at Disney World. The all-volunteer, family-oriented organization is composed of graduates of Boyertown Area High School and other adults who now live in the Boyertown School District.
The Exeter Community Band has been entertaining audiences throughout Berks County since 2002. The all-volunteer band plays a series of summer and Christmas concerts at retirement communities and community and church festivals. Last year, it opened its season at the Extravaganza and wrapped up the summer with its annual appearance at the Oley Fair.
The Pottsgrove Community Band, formed in 1959 by Mr. Tom Roberts, is a group of volunteers of all ages who come together in the love for music to perform for the community. The band presents a spring concert each year, followed by a series of summer concerts at locations in Lower, Upper and Western Pottsgrove, including the beautiful band shell in Sanatoga Park. The band is also a community outreach organization and performs at nursing homes, assisted living centers and retirement communities throughout the area. It is making its second Extravaganza appearance.
The Quakertown Band is Bucks County’s oldest musical organization. Founded in 1877, the band is comprised of both amateur and semi-professional musicians of all ages, many holding music degrees. The band prides itself on presenting diverse programs, including overtures, Broadway and movie show tunes, Big Band, swing and Dixieland music, marches and traditional band and modern Wind Ensemble literature. It is making its second Extravaganza appearance.
The Red Hill Band, located in Red Hill in Montgomery County, is making its first Extravaganza appearance. The band was formed at the Red Hill Hotel on December 6, 1900, and is the only remaining community band serving the Central and Upper Montgomery County area. The band performs about 25 concerts each summer for a variety of fairs, church festivals and park events. Band members are all volunteers, playing only for the joy of music.
The Ringgold New Horizons Band, making its first Extravaganza appearance, was established in the fall of 2012 as a component of the music education and outreach program of the Ringgold Band of Reading. The goal of the band is to celebrate and share the joy and proven health benefits of recreational music making with the senior citizens of Berks County and beyond. Members are encouraged to dig their old instruments out of their closets or attics or, perhaps, to learn to play altogether. Members are then coached by members of the Ringgold Band in a welcoming and supportive environment.
